Ghiet El Ghanam Sleeper Treatment Plant Project

Ghiet El Ghanam Sleeper Treatment Plant Project

The project involves the construction of a Sleeper Treatment Plant and recycling facility for used railway sleepers, representing a highly advanced engineering solution due to the hazardous nature of creosote and the complex technical requirements for timber reconditioning.

Containment & Environmental Protection Systems

The plant was designed with chemically resistant reinforced concrete floors and containment barriers to prevent any potential creosote leakage into the surrounding soil, ensuring full environmental safety compliance.

Autoclave Pressure Technology

The core of the facility is the high-pressure autoclave system, engineered to withstand extreme operating conditions of heat and pressure to ensure deep penetration of creosote into timber fibers for effective treatment and preservation.

Fume Extraction & Air Treatment Systems

Advanced scrubber systems were installed to capture and neutralize hazardous hydrocarbon vapors emitted during processing, ensuring a safe working environment and full environmental protection compliance.

Fire Protection Engineering

Due to the high flammability of creosote (Class B liquid), the facility was equipped with high-capacity fire water tanks, redundant pumping systems, and a strategically designed hydrant network covering all operational and storage zones.

Bund Walls & Spill Containment

Dedicated containment basins were constructed around treatment cylinders and storage areas to prevent the spread of flammable liquids in the event of leakage or fire-related melting scenarios.

Autoclave Engineering (Core System)

The autoclave unit serves as the heart of the facility, engineered as a high-pressure cylindrical vessel designed in compliance with ASME Section VIII standards, capable of handling extreme operational conditions.

Structural & Mechanical Design

  • Fabricated from high-strength carbon steel
  • Length: 20–45 meters | Diameter: 2–3 meters
  • Designed to accommodate rail-mounted sleeper loads
  • Equipped with quick-opening hermetic sealing doors resistant to heat and chemical exposure

Thermal Treatment System

Internal heating coils circulate steam or thermal oil to maintain creosote at 80–100°C, ensuring optimal viscosity for deep penetration into wood fibers.

Pressure & Vacuum Cycle Process

The treatment process is executed through a controlled multi-stage cycle:

  1. Initial vacuum to extract air from wood pores
  2. Hot creosote injection phase
  3. High-pressure impregnation stage
  4. Final vacuum to remove excess surface material

Safety & Control Systems

The system is governed by PLC-based automation with real-time monitoring of temperature, pressure, and cycle duration. Safety relief valves and structural saddle supports ensure operational integrity under extreme loads and thermal expansion conditions.

Project Outcome

The Ghiet El Ghanam facility stands as a benchmark of industrial engineering excellence, successfully integrating environmental protection, mechanical innovation, and high-risk material handling into a fully controlled operational system.
